What's it all about… Alfie?

Welcome to The World of Suzy Homemaker!

Thanks so much for dropping by and for being remotely interested in my ramblings about life on Sue's planet.

Why should you care?

To be honest, I’ve been asking myself the same question! Hopefully, I’ll post something vaguely interesting from time to time and maybe, just maybe, you might enjoy what I have to say and come back for more.

So what IS it all about?

(Translation: Why am I taking up valuable internet space?)

When blogging first took off (yes, I am that old!), I was all like “gotta get me some of that!” I love writing and imagined blogging would be right up my alley. But it also struck me as being rather self-indulgent. I mean, why on earth would anyone want to read my drivel? Who exactly would be interested in my life apart from, well… me?

I’ve always been creative. Over the years, I’ve dabbled in all sorts – from glass painting to stamping, from photography to Photoshop. The handmade greetings cards I still make from time to time even became a nice little earner for a while.

And then we bought OneandSeventy.

I quickly realised that ‘getting people in’ to deal with the issues we'd inherited and do all those things I wanted was going to cost a fortune. So, drawing upon my creative side, I decided to do as much of the work as I could myself (much to DIY-shy Beloved's dismay!)

I’m no stranger to a paintbrush (who hasn't decorated a wall or two in their time?) but that's about it. Sanding worktops? Upcycling features? Re-purposing furniture? Nope… not a Scooby! (Translation: Scooby Doo > clue). And Beloved had an awful feeling I was going to need his help. Oops!

This is our castle. I want it to be right, I want it to look great and I want my efforts to last. So off I went in search of inspiration.

The font of all inspiration

I was already avidly scouring Pinterest for ideas and there, I discovered blogs. Lots of 'em! Mainly Stateside, but all jam-packed with fabulous home decor ideas and tutorials kindly shared by their owners.

Not only have I picked up a ton of wonderful new techniques and gathered a plethora of fabulous ideas, I’ve also discovered that people are interested in people (I know I am!).

Being the nosey sort (who? Moi?), I love peeking inside people’s lives – not just their homes, but their experiences and how they overcome life’s obstacles. From recipes to grow-your-own, from money-saving and shopping tips, to guidance for this journey called life... I love it all.

And then it hit me. Not only could I learn from other bloggers, I might actually have something to contribute to this whole crafty-DIY-love-my-life movement!

Who is Suzy Homemaker?

The World of Suzy Homemaker - www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

I’m a Zumba-dancing, whisky-loving, 40-something bird from Saaf Eaace Lundun (Translation: South East London). I'm a lover of grape and grain, partial to coffee and cake and a little bit addicted to shoes and handbags.

A career PA, my life changed dramatically when I was made redundant during the recession. After licking my wounds for a bit and dabbling in a little of this 'n' that, I started to carve out a new, freelance direction for myself.

Three years ago, Beloved and I upped sticks in Kent for a new life in Staffordshire and since then, I've built a successful Virtual Assistance business, launched two websites, three Twitter accounts a Facebook page and several other social media channels. I've project-managed two major house moves and started cooking meals from scratch, baking bread and growing veg. I've also learned to sew AND migrated from PC to Mac. Not bad going!

I acquired the Suzy Homemaker moniker from my friend Moo (she of Saucepan Game fame). She thought she was being funny; finding it hysterical that after 25 years as a career woman, I was now enjoying things of a more homely nature. The name stuck and here I am. (Moo's demanding royalties. She'll be lucky!)

I’ve been married for coming on 21 years to the most wonderful man in the world (I'm afraid I will accept no arguments on this point; he just is) and I am Mum to a handsome grown up son (also no arguments... but then he does have good genes). In 2013, our little family doubled in size, by one beautiful Granddaughter and the best future Daughter-in-Law a mother could wish for.

And then there’s Harry, our ageing, loveable but frankly annoying diabetic moggy.

This Blog is about us. Oh, alright... it’s about me. It IS always about me, after all!

I hope you enjoy it.

A hui hou (until we meet again),
