Garden makeover: creating a summer oasis

Garden Makeover: creating a summer oasis with www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

During those dark days of 2013, when our purchase of OneandSeventy took FOR EVER, it was daydreaming of summer in our new garden that kept me going.

Now that summer is finally here, I'm realising those dreams and spending as much time out here as humanly possible.

I cannot lie… I'm writing this post from the comfort of my sun lounger. All I can hear are sparrows and starlings fighting over the fat balls, our make-do waterfall bubbling away (the subject of a future makeover, so watch out for that!) and the fish making "slap slap" sounds as they feed on the algae.

Go li'l fishes, go!

As a fully mobile Virtual Assistant, I am fortunate to be able to work from anywhere - be it at my desk, or a client's premises. So, during nice weather, relocating my office to the garden is a no brainer.

As you might imagine from my various ramblings on The World of Suzy Homemaker, I'm a girl to whom environment is of utmost importance to her wellbeing, which can mean only one thing...

Garden makeover!

First stop, that hideous decking; a lovely welcome gift from the previous owners. Once cleaned, it was time to crack open the stain.

I chose Ronseal Decking Stain in Country oak, which I bought as a stain/applicator combo from Homebase.

And yes... It really does do exactly what it says in the tin!

(Plastic container just doesn't have the same ring to it.)

My only gripe is that the applicator handle is a bit short; it could really use one more pole. I'm 5ft 5" and even I had to constantly bend down to apply the stain and that don't half play havoc on your back after a while!

As I stained merrily away, I noticed a few areas which could've been cleaned a little better (I blame sunglasses!) and there were some places where the stain didn't take so well first time.

But hey! Compared to what it was like before, it's brilliant!

Brilliant enough break out the garden furniture.

And besides... I was going for the rustic look.

Ha!

Erm, yeah… ignore the neighbour's fence. We're in talks about replacing that monstrosity!

OneandSeventy is blessed with a South-facing garden and the decking is located on the west side which, maximises the sunshine.

Lush.

No summer's day is complete without an arty reflection shot
of succulents in lime green planters, atop a glass patio table!

A few more plants later, including three new Golden Cypress, some Rosemary and Thyme which I repotted from a smaller planter, a beautiful Black Lace Elder that'll look stunning in a year or two, and a selection of Scarlet and Dark Red Geraniums for a pop of colour and hey presto!

My very own little summer oasis.
