Forest Holidays - Golden Oak cabin, Sherwood Forest | www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

Few things give me greater pleasure than spending quality time with Beloved. I love nothing more than cracking open a bottle of wine, sharing a nice meal and putting the world to rights.

It's what makes the rest of my world so enjoyable.

Throw in a weekend away and my world is complete... Especially if that weekend involves a cabin in the forest.

Hiding out in a log cabin with nothing but trees, birds and the odd mammal to disturb us is our idea of heaven. From the moment we arrive, it's like coming home. Our shoulders drop and we feel instantly relaxed.

Hubby and I have long been fans of Forest Holidays. Our first taste of cabin life was in 2007, in the days when the company's Deer Park site in Cornwall was still run by the Forestry Commission.

Deer Park, Cornwall - 2007

Back then, you had to drive out of the site to get so much as a mobile phone signal. It really was a forest hideaway!

Since then, we've visited more than half of Forest Holidays' nine sites, some more than once.

Most of the time, we've gone as a couple. Some we've visited with friends or family. Every time has been brilliant.

From Keldy on the border of the breath-taking North Yorkshire Moors, to the stunning Highlands of Scotland and the historic Forest of Dean - each site has something different to offer, whilst at the same time being very familiar.

The cabins are great. Clean, comfortable, spacious, and well-stocked most come equipped with in-cabin entertainment that includes a large selection of online films.

These days, there's also WiFi for those of us who can't possibly bear the thought of being disconnected!

Over the years, we've stayed in all the cabin types but when pennies allow, we aim for a Golden Oak - complete with log fire and hot tub. Even during the coldest months, sipping champagne in a hot tub is THE most delicious indulgence!

(Sorry, no pictures! I've been through all of our Forest Holidays photos and there isn't one of us in the hot tub. Aren't you lucky?!)

This was our first visit to Sherwood Forest, but we instantly knew it wouldn't be our last. With well-spaced cabins and plenty of trees between to give us the privacy we crave, we very quickly knew this site would become a firm favourite.

I couldn't wait to get unpacked, check out the site and wander over to the Forest Retreat for a nice cold pint!

On Saturday, we donned our walking boots and headed into nearby Sherwood Pines, where we found the entire British Cycling community out in force for a mountain bike competition.

We considered jumping on the bandwagon and renting a couple of bikes, or even exploring the park on a Segway, but thought better of it. Maybe next time! We might even be tempted into the treetops with Go Ape. I've not been before, but it looks like tons of fun (if a little bit scary!).

Instead, we elected for a nice long walk, well away from the competition zone. I amused myself by getting in touch with my inner child...

One thing we always do when we're away with Forest Holidays is book in for one of the Ranger Activities. In previous visits, we've hunted bats and tested our survival skills.

This time around, we wrapped up warm and joined Ranger John for a Night Vision walk.

Equipped with night vision scopes, we enjoyed a bracing walk in search of nocturnal creatures, like deer and owls. Beloved had more luck than me spotting the local wildlife, although I did see a fox skeleton.

A bit macabre, but fascinating nevertheless.

We returned to the cabin to be greeted by the mouth-watering aroma of a warming, home-cooked lamb curry.

Bringing a slow cooker along is one of the many advantages of self-catering!

After a nice lie-in, we took it easy like Sunday morning.

While Beloved enjoyed some rare sofa time, I lit some candles, took up residence in the large armchair and whiled away a blissful few hours looking out at the forest and contemplating my navel.

Forest Holidays sites are great for wildlife lovers.

While the cabins are the perfect vantage point for a spot of twitching.

Sherwood is home to a wide variety of feathered friends and I have to admit to getting rather hand-clappy when I spotted my very first Tree Creeper!

Beloved and I do like a nice Sunday Lunch and the Dog and Duck in Chipstone came highly recommended by a member of Forest Holidays staff.

From the outside, it looks like any normal country pub, but stepping over the threshold was a complete surprise. With its eclectic décor and resident pianist, we felt a million miles from the forest!

Most unexpected!

The food, however, was just as delicious as we'd been led to believe.

Roast Beef – THE choice for Sunday Lunch!

As rain bucketed it down outside, we spent the rest of Sunday hunkered down on the sofa, periodically watching films and gazing out of the window.

Bliss.

As always, the time to leave came around far too soon, but we're already looking forward to our next weekend escape with Forest Holidays.

A hui hou,

My heartfelt thanks to Forest Holidays for packing us off to Sherwood Forest for this wonderful weekend break. As always, all comments and opinions are entirely my own.

    Hi Suzy
Some time ago you suggested forest holidays to me and I can't thank you enough. Having just recently returned from our third visit it is now our mission to visit each location.
Not only because we love the cabins so much but we have a need to collect all the ducks
