Tasting the Grain: BenRiach

Tasting the Grain: BenRiach with www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

I've been so busy recently, I'm only just getting around to writing about my latest whisky tasting adventures.

Disgraceful!

But fear not, whisky fans, I would never forget you! ;-)

Beloved and I spent my Birthday among new friends at The Whisky Shop in Trentham, where we tasted bottlings from BenRiach's three distilleries.

The idea for this particular tasting came from the store's previous manager. Whilst we were sad to see David seconded to a new store, it has to be said that the changeover appears to have been seamless. New manager Craig, ably assisted by my trusty model Lee, continues to ensure our whisky tasting sessions are both informative and fun.

BenRiach 12yo Heart of Speyside, Single Malt Scotch Whisky by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

BenRiach 12yo Heart of Speyside, Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£37.00)
Sweet on the nose, harsh on the back of the nose and tongue (translation: it tingled!) 6/10

Glenglassaugh Revival Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

Glenglassaugh Revival Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£43.00)
This whisky is just three years old, but you wouldn't know it.
It has hints of toffee on the nose and oh my...! It is smooth with an almost liqueur taste to it,
A lovely big hit of peat follows a good couple of seconds later.
Just gorgeous and my favourite of the night. 9/10

I'm not much of a Tequila drinker, but I'm reliably informed the Glenglassaugh Revival smells just like it. But what I do know is that I enjoyed this one so much, it came home with me!

Ooops!

Well... it WAS my Birthday!

Glendronach Revival 15 yo Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

Glendronach Revival 15 yo Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£54.00)
Hints of sherry on the nose, from its full maturation in sherry casks.
Sweet and smooth, with a hint of dried fruit at the end.
Nicer with a couple of drops of water. 7/10

BenRiach 17yo Heart of Speyside, Single Malt Scotch Whisky - by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

BenRiach 17yo Heart of Speyside, Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Vintage 1995 bottling (£85.00)
Exclusive to The Whisky Shop, this cask-strength BenRiach has hints of caramel on the nose.
Although fiery, it has a very pleasant taste. 8/10

They say that to fully appreciate the flavour of whisky, you should hold it in your mouth for 1 second per year of the whisky's age. Well there was no way that was happening with this fiery malt! I managed a paltry 8 of the recommended 17 seconds before I wanted to call the fire brigade!

Mind you, now that I think about it, perhaps I should have stuck with it...

Right girls? ;-)

*sigh*

Now where was I?

Oh yes.

BenRiach Curiositas 10yo Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

BenRiach Curiositas 10yo Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£42.00)
Peaty on the nose, the smell of this whisky is reminiscent of a summer's evening beside the fire pit.
Nice flavour, without the kick one normally gets with a peaty malt. 7/10

Glenglossie 18yo Old Malt Cask Collection by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

Glenglossie 18yo Old Malt Cask Collection (£84.99)
Medicinal on the nose, not pleasant. Not a bad flavour, but not a favourite.
This whisky had the big hit I've come to expect from a cask-strength malt. 7/10

In addition to the BenRiach bottlings, I was also invited as part of a select few to partake of a Bowmore 15 year old. A lovely treat for the Birthday girl and a wonderful way to end the evening.

Bowmore 15yo Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky by www.suzy-homemaker.co.uk

Bowmore 15yo Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£62.00)
Nice on the nose, sweet and peaty to taste. Lovely. 8/10

All the whiskies from this and other Tasting the Grain sessions can be purchased online or from your local branch of The Whisky Shop.

As always, please drink responsibly. I don't want to be held responsible for any liver problems!

Sláinte!
